WishList Insider – Forum Focus 02

We realize a lot can happen throughout the course of a week.  Everyone can become busy with a little of “this” and a lot of “that” during their day to day lives so it’s not always easy to keep on top of all the useful and helpful posts within the Insider Forums.

For these reasons we have decided to apply some focus to a number of posts each week that we believe can benefit our Members.

Read on for summaries and links to this week’s “Forum Focus” Posts.

WP Twin – Backup Wishlist Drip or No Drip | Thesis | Cloning from One Webhost to Another within 57 Seconds!

Do you ever wish you could sit in on a really great conversation and listen in as two options are brought forward and discussed intelligently?  Well, you can do exactly that if you head over to this post regarding the cloning/backup of WordPress sites.

M and John Dowdy both bring up excellent points on the validity of “WP Twin” and “Backup Buddy” – two options to copy and backup your WordPress sites.  Another option even comes up during the discussion!

I can’t say exactly which one is “better” in my opinion at this point as it seems to be more of a case of “use the one that fits your situation”.

I encourage you to check out the post as it really is full of great info but here are the direct links to the options listed in the forum post for quick reference:

Why pay when you can get it for free?

A great point in this thread is “what is really free”?  Are people willing to pay for “free” content they can find on the internet if they were to look hard enough?

How does the “CONVENIENCE” factor play into things?  If the correct price is placed on content that is collected and housed in one easy to find and navigate area, will people pay?

If someone offered me a stack of “free” comics but I could only pick them up at 1pm on a Wednesday and they lived 3 hours from me, is it really “free”?

Well, I would likely justify it as such since I really like comics J  BUT I really should be factoring in the time lost having to leave work and the gas and time it is going to cost me in order to pick up my “no cost” comics.  Perhaps it would be better to have the owner of the comics drop them in the mail for me.  It’s a small cost that ultimately makes getting the comics easier and likely less expensive.

Darren, David Brigthton, Jeff Pfau, Charly Leetham and Stu all contribute major points throughout this thread (and I expand a little on my comics example above ;))

Lorum Ipsum – Pseudo-Latin Text Generator (Placeholder Text)

This post is a few weeks old but is still very useful so I’m “dusting it off” and presenting it for your benefit J

Jeff Pfau starts things off with a link to BlindTextGenerator.com (a site that will generate placeholder text for all your text needs) and then Charly Leetham follows that up with a link of her own to lipsum.com

If you need a fast batch of placeholder text in a hurry, lipsum.com is solid as it’s quick and easy – a few seconds will result in a batch of text you can use right away.

However, if you have a few moments more, you can use BlindTextGenerator.com which as Jeff explains allows you to control aspects of the text like column width, font type/size/etc., number of words/number of characters and number of paragraphs.

It even has different TYPES of text which I had never seen before.  You can use Lorem ipsum, Cicero or something called “Far Far Away” which is actually pretty cool as it reads almost like a story 🙂

Examples of these types of text and more can be viewed in the full forum thread.

No more having to copy and paste the same sentence over and over again!

  1. @Wray…good focus on the, “Get it for free”. Who is David Brighton? lol

    • Wray says:

Well @David, all I can say is that “David Brinton” is very prolific within WLI so you will likely hear more from him.

You might even run into him in the future 😉

  2. Stu McLaren says:

The “Free Content” discussion is something everyone should take a look at.

If you haven’t yet, you’ll likely face this objection at some point which is why it’s advantageous to learn what your options are.

  3. John Dowdy says:

Great call on Forum Focus! I completely missed the discussion on the BlindTextGenerator.com

    • Wray says:

Agreed! That WP Twin post is another example of finding out about a new plugin I didn’t know existed and that I can certainly see the appeal of now.
