Building Your Community: Tips From Top Bloggers – Part 1

Members come for the content and stay for the community.

Since most membership sites make the bulk of their profits from recurring payments, it’s to your financial advantage for members to stick around. So how do you encourage this?

By creating and cultivating a thriving member community.

Thanks to what Linda Bernstein, Britt Michaelian, Amy Vernon, and Jessica Northey presented at this year’s New Media Expo, I can share some of their valuable insights on how you too can create exactly that… A thriving community for your members to enjoy.

Members Are Not Just Numbers

Walk into any DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) or government building and we best be prepared to wait.

“Next… next… next…”

This is what we will hear – and usually with an extended wait between each additional “Next”.

We sit there and wait… then wait some more as we begin to get that feeling. You know the one. That sense of just being another face in the crowd.

Are you treating your members like this? Do they feel like “just a number”?

Minimum Viable Product – How Much Content?

How do you know how much content is enough?

When starting out, you want to present enough content to your members so they see the value of what they are paying for. Members should feel they are getting great bang for their buck when they start digging into your content.

But, how do you know when it is too much or too little?

Not enough articles or videos will cause members to question their choice to sign up while a seemingly unending avalanche of podcasts and webinars may result in the very same situation.

This forum thread talks about finding that “Sweet Spot” and delivering just what members want and need.

What Have Been Your Pricing “Ah-Has”?

How much should you charge for your site?

Can you raise of lower your price later?

Should you include Up-sells?

All of these questions (and many more) are brought up and discussed in this informative exchange between Insiders. Pricing your membership is one of the most important steps when building and maintaining a site.

This means there are a number of factors to consider.

Some of the choices you make now can affect your options down the line.

Stu McLaren jumps into this conversation with 4 things to keep in mind when setting the price for your membership.

Submit Your Suggestions For Video Tutorials

This time around, we want to know what types of subjects you would like covered in some more technical tutorial videos.

WishList Team member John is going to be creating a series of video tutorials and we want to know what you want to learn more about.

As John mentions on this thread…

“While it’s generally focused on technical stuff (since that’s what I know) that doesn’t mean it has to be all coding. It could really be anything, so if you have a suggestion, just post it below and I’ll see if/how I can work it in.”

So please feel free to head over to the forum and post any suggestions or requests you have for video tutorials. We’ll try to address as many as possible.

What’s Your Email Segmentation Strategy For Members?

Do you segment your email lists?

Or does each of your membership emails get sent to all your members?

It’s a good idea to consider separating your email lists based on categories like membership level, non-member, etc. Your Open Rate will increase if you are directing emails to the people who are most likely to click on them when they arrive in their inboxes.

Insiders share how they are tackling this email technique in this forum conversation.

My Merchant Account Experience So Far… FREE Trial Is A No Go!

Are Free Trials really possible?

That is the question addressed by Insiders in this thread.

Different payment processors present different options and challenges when you want to give members a free taste of your membership. It’s not always as easy as creating a payment button and including it on your sales page.

Find out what to be aware of so you aren’t faced with issues down the line.
