Interview With Chris Guillebeau

New York Times Best-selling author Chris Guillebeau just released his brand new book $100 Startup and it ROCKS!

Why?

Because it’s packed with example after example of everyday people starting highly successful businesses on a shoestring budget. He then compliments all these case studies with practical insights on how you can apply similar strategies to your own business.

But what grabbed my attention were the “Membership Site” examples throughout the book.

That’s why I decided we needed to talk to Chris about the book and how to apply the info given his experience running his own membership sites.

      Very well said @Raphael!

If you’re happy with what you are doing, then everything else falls into place.

    Excellent interview! Fantastic book!

P.S. I started back in the 80′s with Direct Marketing. We had a 6 to 9 month turn-around on our media tests. Gotta love the speed of the internet :)

    • Stu McLaren July 15, 2012 at 2:57 pm #

      Thanks Leon.

And you’re right… marketing is SO much easier these days thanks to the internet.

Great interview, I am always fascinated by the variety of unusual and interesting “small” business ideas that people come up with!

    Thanks Stu!

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:32 am #

It’s true Karen Kuntz, the possibilities for membership sites and small businesses seem endless.

There are SO many speciality niches out there now. It’s pretty awesome.

  5. Jerry July 14, 2012 at 9:11 am #

wow, I wanted to travel the world and visit every country and then share the experience, but I guess that is not useful to others – wish I would not have seen this interview until I was back :(

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:34 am #

@Jerry – There will still be plenty of people interested in your travels and what you have learned. There is always a market for knowledge :)

    • karen kuntz July 16, 2012 at 4:34 pm #

Jerry, don’t be sad. Every person has their own unique set of personal experiences, life perspectives and skills that they bring to the table. Your experiences and perspective may be completely different that those of Chris. AND just an valuable.

There is rarely only “one” of anything.

I remember when I was in the 3rd grade and the “Weekly Reader” had an article about computers that talked about how big they were and how in order to get more computing power they would have to become bigger and bigger. Where would we be if people like Steve Jobs and others said-”Computers must be big so my ideas obviously won’t work”?

What if the “great explorers” never explored further because someone else had already been there?

We each have something of value, skills, ideas, experiences etc. that can be of value to others.

      Hope this helps!! :)

    Hi Stu,

That was a fun high energy interview, I really enjoyed it.

I am on the way to purchase the book right now.

Thanks for the upbeat approach you have for business.

    You Rock!

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:37 am #

Glad you enjoyed the interview. I was in the room when it was recorded and I can agree that the energy from both Stu and Chris was pretty great.

      Enjoy the book!

  7. Russ Hamel July 14, 2012 at 11:57 am #

I get excited – I mean REALLY excited – when I read Chris’ book (currently reading The Art of Non-Conformity) and then listening to him talking here with Stu McLaren because I’M DOING WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT! I know I’m on the right track!

I know so many of those small business principles work – ‘just do it and see what happens – tweak as you go’; ‘serve your people ONE at a time and make them each feel like the most important person in the world’…

I did these – PROVED these things for years in my offline business, succeeding where others told me I had NO chance! But because I wanted to bring my talents to a much bigger stage (bigger than my real-world 5-square-mile radius), today’s Internet makes that possible for me.

Did I tell you I’m EXCITED? This interview is confirmation!

    All the best from Toronto,
    Russ

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:40 am #

Russ Hamel – Sooooo, would you say you are excited by this interview? ;)

We love hearing this kind of thing and this is one of the main reasons we do these interviews with successful authors. We truly believe Insiders can take cues and advice from these interviews and apply it to their own sites.

  8. Michael Goodrich July 14, 2012 at 12:48 pm #

Thanks Stu…great interview and I’m so grateful for Wishlist too…just about to start using it!!

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:41 am #

that’s awesome @Michael. Keep us posted on your progress :)

  9. Cheri Bennett July 14, 2012 at 9:19 pm #

Thanks Stu McLaren and Chris! Great interview. I highly recommend the book $100 start up. Read it a month or so ago.

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:42 am #

It’s a solid read, Cheri Bennett.

Be sure to call the book store ahead of time if you want to get it, it was sold out at a couple places I tried :)

  10. Phill Mason July 15, 2012 at 10:07 am #

Hi guys, great interview, thanks for sharing.

I also had that question a few times about ‘why pay for your content over the free stuff’ and I found that everyone was happy to pay for the structure of the content.

Sure similar stuff is freely available across the internet, but free isn’t always structured in a way that’s good for the customer and that fragmented approach often leaves them a little disappointed.

So I strongly believe that most of my guitar course members are with me because I provide that consistent structured content that will guide them to their end goal much quicker and easier than if they tried it on their own.

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:44 am #

Excellent points @Phill. Structuring the content and placing it all in one place is a very valuable way to handle content. I count myself in the number of people who is willing to pay a price in order to have everything laid out for me in an easy to digest manner.

  11. Stu McLaren July 15, 2012 at 12:36 pm #

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

It was a fun interview and Chris is an awesome dude away from the “glitch and glamor” as well.

He’s super down to earth and genuinely cares for his customers.

  12. David Brinton July 15, 2012 at 5:44 pm #

Great interview. Truck loads of great info. I love the point about what can you do? Answer…what do people ask you about? They percieve you as an authority. How can you make it useful for the member, reader.

    • Wray July 16, 2012 at 9:46 am #

      Well said, David Brinton.

Your members view you as the authority so it’s up to the site owner to deliver value based on that.

  13. Chris Aitken July 16, 2012 at 5:12 am #

Hi Stu McLaren — can you please send a link to the “advanced” Evernote PDF manual? When I Googled it, there were multiple options …

    Thanks, Chris

  14. karen kuntz July 16, 2012 at 4:36 pm #

I would love to know what are the eight countries he has not been to!

    • Wray July 17, 2012 at 9:34 am #

Hmmm, good question, @Karen. I’m actually not sure what those 8 countiries are.

But after talking to Chris, I have a feeling there will be less than 8 countries he hasn’t visited pretty soon :)

  15. Blaine Moore July 27, 2012 at 12:04 pm #

Great interview – ordering a copy of the book now!

  16. Chris Hanlon August 13, 2012 at 12:08 am #
