Here is a topic(s) I would like to see covered in some insider venue (or maybe its already been done?)

How does one set up a test site?
Related? How does one move their site to a different host?
Related? How would one create a backup and test how the whole backup from scratch thing would work?

Presently, I don’t have a test site so anytime I make a change its on the live site – a few times chaos has ensued when things didn’t go well.

Presently, I don’t do backups off of the domain site (though the host does backups) again as I don’t feel I know how I would use them to do a restore – again maybe a test site would help

Presently, every time my host site stops working or seems slow without explanation I muse about moving to a different domain but then when things are working again I don’t make the switch as migrating the site with all its tweaks seems an insurmountable task potentially fraught with peril. Also some of the threads have indicated that it might get fairly complicated ie usernames and passwords might not transfer ????

Sooooo I think this would be a good topic(s) but I also think would need to get down to a fairly detailed level to make one comfortable that they could implement on their own?

Edward Taubman – Creating a back up of your site and moving to a new host is something you will want to think about before jumping into but it is possible and can be done with a little preparation. I recommend doing a quick search in the forums about this as I do remember a few conversations that covered this. You could even start your own new thread if you wanted.

That all being said, you asked about a test environment as well which can be very quick and easy to set up. All you need a URL, a WordPress installation on that URL and then you can install WishList Member on that site. You now have a test environment that you can play with.

You can even do a full back up of your live WordPress site and install that on the new test URL. Then you can test exactly how things will happen on your live site. You can simply update your test site with the latest version of your live site database and then test with no risk of affecting your live site.

A test site would allow you to work through any potential issues so that your members don’t have to deal with possible issues.

Your host should be able to create a back up of your site for you if you are insure how to do this. You can also look into WordPress plugins that would back up your site for you. I believe a popular one is called Back Up Buddy.

Thanks for taking the time to post these thoughts and we’ll certainly look into posting more about this in the future.
